Bobbing for Apples

The title of this post is in no way metaphorical. Given that the Halloween season is upon us and there was a commercial on TV tonight that showed someone bobbing for apples, my wife and I had a discussion in which we agreed that bobbing for apples is possibly the least "fun" thing a person could do that is supposed to be fun.

I've done it one time and I'm pretty sure I'm never going to do it again. First, the water is kind of scary. Pools don't scare me. Most lakes don't scare me. Oceans...well, they are scary.* But water in a huge basin like that is scary. And how unnatural is it to plunge your head into a tub of water with your mouth open? The other thing that is not fun is failing to latch on to an apple. The one time I played I had no success at all. It was like the apples were running away from me. I may have had trouble because I didn't really want to open my mouth.

So add that to the long list of things that suck about Halloween. And while we're at it, let's put this "game" on there too. Trust me, those kids are not having fun.

So, what are some other things that are supposed to be fun, but totally are not?

I don't know, Paul. You know how I feel about doughnuts. I might have to disagree about the eating them on a string not being fun thing.

Now, bobbing for donuts in a bucket of water? Not fun.

Going to an opera or ballet or any place that requires pantyhose...not fun.

I was once at a Halloween party at an Air Force Officers Club. It was a big pilot base and everyone was a little drunk. There was apple bobbing contest (which I had never done and have never done since), and Husband thought I should try it. He gave me explicit an apple directly on the bottom of the tub with my teeth and yank the sucker up. People were STUNNED when little old me brought the apple up in about one second and won. (If only publishing was that easy). The apple bobbing wasn't scary, but not a lot is, with couple beers in me.

I've also tried Jacqui's donut thing, which I agree is not fun (and I wasn't even wearing pantyhose when I did it).

Go Anita, you apple grabber you!
I've tried that once and did NOT like it though. It's cold, messes up your hair, and not to mention germy!
But A list of not fun things about Halloween????? Halloween is SO fun! I think I would have fun eating a doughnut on a string. Doughnuts are one of my fave treats in the world! A few times at my class Halloween party we stringed Lifesavers onto a string, lined the students up and they had to suck (not bite) the candy and first one done won. And yes, they even had fun!

I thought of some other games that were supposed to be fun, but weren't:

1. Pin the tail on the donkey--disorientation is not fun.

2. Duck, Duck, Goose

I agree with Kelly, Halloween is SOOOOO much fun. Although Apple bobbing does pretty much suck, unless they keep on the stems and you can just grab it them with your teeth and not get wet.

Dominoes is not fun. Doing all that math in a hurry is intimidating. Any board game that requires skill is intimidating (like Scrabble). And Monopoly? Please. I always end up on Broadway and Park Place--with hotels on them.

Passing a lemon under your chin is fun if you like the people you're standing next to and they've brushed their teeth recently.

Should that be dominoes ARE not fun? (Sometimes writing isn't fun.)

That game where you spin around twenty times with your forehead on the end of a bat and then race to the finish not fun.

Eating Halloween candy is a fun game.

I think the Google folks sit around and make up words that rhyme with body parts. Now that's a pretty fun game.

OMG, camping is so NOT fun. I don't need nice shoes or fancy purses, but I do need a toilet that flushes!

Fighting with your preschooler over how much candy she can eat in one sitting is MOT fun.

I feel too old for games, so all games are no fun. But I bet I'll have fun watching.

Dancing. Can someone please explain to me who decided that having a seizure to a beat will be this fun thing that everybody likes to do? I don't think I'll ever get that one.

Pinatas are not fun. Especially when kids miss Spongebob/Dora/Scooby Doo and hit dad in the nads instead.

Or in the nesticals.

Volleyball is not fun. Sore wrists and sand in your suit? No thanks. But for some reason my sis in law keeps trying to get me to join her league, or team, or whatever.
So I keep bugging her to go skiing.
It's the circle of life.

Yep. I agree. Dancing, pinatas, and volleyball are not fun.

Watching other people dance and making fun of them is a blast, though.

Good work on nesticles, Myra.

I mean, on using the word nesticles in a funny way, not like, good work on...oh, forget it.

I have nothing original to contribute to the discussion.
But, "Hi, Paul -- didja get my email?"
