Did you read THE ROAD? I think I liked it better than BOOK THIEF.

Paul Michael Murphy said...

Read it in 2008.

Ah.

I think I'm going to stop writing novel(s). I've been doing a lot of soul-searching and I think I'm only writing as a way to eek out some love and attention. Husband gets all the oohs and aahs around here, because he's nice, a good person and his job is interesting (not that that's bad stuff), and I think I've just been looking for a way to excel at something myself, so I've been trying to get a novel published. Problem is, I'm not sure my writing is excellent. It's sorta funny in a sad kind of way.

Anyway, the point: I'll probably switch the angle of my posts from writing-heavy to reading-heavy. So if you read any totally awesome books, please let me know.

Where'd you get the notion that your writing needs to be excellent to get published?

You're right. I think I had the holiday blues. Also, I've been reading too many Pulitzers. Good news: I'm feeling better and will keep writing. Maybe we should write a book together. A YA. I'll write the female's perspective and you write the male's. JUNO/NICK&NORA/BREAKFAST CLUB feel.

Apparently I gotta put The Book Thief on my To Read List. Actually it's there, but that list is LONG! Got The Hunger Games for Christmas, pretty psyched to get started.
Anita, keep writing!

Anita, based on your comments and blog posts you're an excellent writer! I'm glad you've decided to stick with it. Stop reading award winners.

Oh, right, this is PMM's blog. Love your lists and award (very attractive). Read Book Thief a while back--I can see why it's your favorite. I read Art of Racing in the Rain because you mentioned it in a post and it's my favorite book of 2009. So ... thanks.

Think of this blog as one of those cozy, hole-in-the-wall bars where everyone knows everyone. I'll be the bartender, and you can talk to me if you like, but I'd just as soon pour a few shots of whiskey, run your Keno tickets, and listen to your stories.

Murph, we've read exactly zero of the same books this year but I'll definitely add "The Book Thief" to my 2010 list. I'll be posting my own "TopDragon" award list this week; been doing it for years but always by genre.

Anita: Keep writing; I enjoy reading your Gazette column far more than any Pulitzer winner :)

Thanks, everyone! I'm going to keep writing AND drinking at this bar.

I'm nominated for two categories, but didn't win either? I'm turning into the Susan Lucci of book awards.

If it makes you feel better, Looking for Alaska is like eight years old. If I'd had my head screwed on right I would have read it a few years ago and then you would have won.

Guess I'll pick up Book Thief and The Hitchhiker's Guide. I do appreciate your YA suggestions for my 11-year old! And I did notice one major work missing...one that involved a mow...

Paul Michael Murphy said...

Ha! Didn't quite finish that one. I should have kept a list of those books. I could have titled it "Books I Thought Would Rule, but Which Actually Kind of Sucked."

I'm glad you liked The Lost Conspiracy. I always like it when my likes are confirmed(of course!) and that is a book that I haven't heard much about other places.

Really glad to hear Anita is still working on her novel.
